What is Raider?
Raider training builds dedication and determination by challenging the participants in practical hands-on applications that increase physical fitness, build self-confidence, develops leadership and requires teamwork during competition among other JROTC programs and schools. Raider is very physically demanding with cadets running 5-8 Miles per Raider Meet.
A Raider Team consist of 12 members with 10 competing in each event. Raider competitions vary in the events that they offer. However, most competitions provide cadets a program of mentally and physically challenging events such as: the Army Physical Fitness Test (2-mile run, push-up, sit-up), Cross Country Rescue (first aid skills and the litter carry), Ammo Can Relay, One-Rope Bridge, Ruck Sack Runs, Tire Flip, Humvee Pull, Obstacle Course, and Team Runs. Typically, a Raider Competition will consist of five events. The events are conducted one after the other, so students must develop a regular exercise program to prepare well in advance for these competitions.
New Cadets wishing to tryout for the Raider Team will need to show up for school in shape. You will tryout August 7-8 2023. Parental permission is required to tryout. Tryout events will consist of a 1.5 mile run, Pull-ups, 30 yard tire flip (95 lbs), 400-meter run while wearing a 25-pound vest and ammo carry relay. The best advice to prepare is start running as soon possible during summer break. If you wish to workout with the Raiders over the summer, contact MAJ(R) Newbill and he will put you in touch with a team representative.
If you make the team, there will be a mandatory parent meeting on August 10 for an overview of the calendar, review of required paperwork, and a discussion about parent support. Raiders is very competitive and requires a high level of fitness, strong work ethic, self-discipline, and team commitment. The summer running plan for returning Raiders can be found on this web page: Go to Teams, click on Raiders, click on summer workout plan, open the file below the picture. This will show you the the minutes Raiders should be running over the summer. Raiders is fun but tough and injuries will happen.
Physicals are required to compete in Raider. All physicals must be completed by August 28. Raider fees will be approximately $100 and new Cadets will be required to purchase lightweight running boots ($125-$175 depending on type). Please do not purchase boots until you have made the team. We will provide you guidance on what to get and where.
Practices start with four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) after school. Once the season begins and depending on the level of performance, practice days will change to Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. All Raider Meets are on Saturdays and normally take all day.
Cadets who successfully complete two consecutive Raider seasons, have a B average in JROTC, remain academically eligible, meet practice requirements, participate in the Area, State or National Raider Meets, and have not served cumulative ISS/OSS days exceeding five days will be awarded the South Paulding Athletic Letter.
Raider Team Parents: Reference health insurance if needed - there is a link on the school district’s website that will take you to an application for student accident insurance, provided by T.W. Lord Insurance Company. The district is not involved in this service and is not responsible for claims. This can be used as primary or supplemental insurance and is an affordable for students participating in school-sponsored athletics/activities.
